Root Canal Treatment
Modern, pain-free RCT performed under rubber dam isolation and magnification loupes — the gold standard protocol for safe, precise and comfortable treatment.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment (RCT) is a procedure to save a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay or infection. The infected pulp — the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels — is carefully removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the tooth is sealed and restored with a crown.
Despite its reputation, modern RCT is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. At Sri Vinayaga Dental Clinic we use advanced rotary instruments, digital X-rays and effective local anaesthesia. All root canal treatments are performed under rubber dam isolation and magnification loupes — the gold standard combination for precision, infection control and the best possible outcomes.
When do you need it?
- Severe toothache, especially when biting or applying pressure
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that doesn’t go away
- Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
- Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums
- A persistent pimple or abscess on the gums
- Deep decay that has reached the pulp of the tooth
How the procedure works
Digital X-ray
We take a digital X-ray to assess the extent of infection and plan the treatment accurately.
Local anaesthesia
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. You will feel pressure but no pain during the procedure.
Rubber dam placement
A rubber dam is placed to isolate the tooth, keep it dry and maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure.
Access opening
A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth — viewed under magnification loupes for precise access.
Pulp removal
The infected pulp is removed using precision rotary instruments (X-Smart / ProTaper by Dentsply).
Cleaning & shaping
The canals are cleaned, shaped and irrigated to remove all bacteria and debris.
Sealing
The canals are filled with gutta-percha and sealed to prevent re-infection.
Crown restoration
A ceramic crown is placed over the tooth (usually at the next appointment) to protect and restore it fully.
Frequently asked questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia — most patients feel mild pressure but no pain. Post-treatment soreness for 1–2 days is normal and easily managed with standard pain medication.
How many visits does it take?
Usually 2 visits — the RCT itself, and a follow-up for the crown. In straightforward cases it can sometimes be completed in a single visit.
How long does the tooth last after RCT?
With a proper crown and good oral hygiene, a root-canal treated tooth can last a lifetime. Regular checkups are important to monitor the tooth.
Is it better to extract the tooth instead?
Saving your natural tooth is almost always the better option. Extraction leads to bone loss and requires replacement with an implant or bridge. RCT preserves your natural tooth and is more cost-effective in the long run.
How much does it cost?
Our fees are transparent and standardised. We will give you a clear cost estimate before starting any treatment — no hidden charges.
